North Atlantic right whales are beginning their migration south to the calving grounds

‘Calvin’ (Catalog #2223) was sighted off New Jersey about a week ago…then Virginia… then North Carolina…headed south!

Is she coming to Right Whale Week or the Right Whale Festival????
Dust off your binoculars! Let’s be on the lookout from our beaches later this week.
How did ‘Calvin’ get her name?
’Calvin’ was named after Calvin from the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes because of her remarkable independence. After her mother, ‘Delilah’ (Catalog #1223), was killed in a vessel strike when ‘Calvin’ was only about eight months old, researchers feared she wouldn’t survive on her own. When she was later spotted healthy and thriving, she was given the name “Calvin” to reflect that independent spirit.
And yes, despite the name, ‘Calvin’ is a female whale. 😊 She’s gone on to survive multiple entanglements and has had calves of her own, which is one reason so many right whale researchers and enthusiasts are fond of her.
Report any whale sightings!
We might just get a sighting before the Right Whale Festival🐋 😎 🐋 .
Keep a sharp lookout from the beach, and if you see anything, call Julie Albert, Right Whale Sighting Network (888) 979-4253.
